Headless Shopify Developer in Montreal

Want the robustness of Shopify without a theme's constraints? IDNUAGE builds decoupled (headless) online stores that use Shopify as the commerce engine and the Storefront API as the source of truth, while keeping full control over design, performance and experience. As a headless Shopify developer based in Montreal, I deliver custom transactional sites for businesses, nonprofits and institutions across Quebec, remotely.

Headless commerce instead of a theme

A standard Shopify theme imposes its templating engine (Liquid), its structure and its customization limits. The headless approach flips the relationship: Shopify handles the catalog, inventory, orders and checkout, while your site is an independent web application that consumes that data through the Shopify Storefront API. You're no longer locked into a theme.

That's exactly what I built for Belvedere Barbers: a Next.js site where the product catalog is fetched server-side via the Storefront API and the cart is managed through the Cart API and Server Actions, without relying on the Shopify theme. This technical proof shows you can fully decouple the storefront from the Shopify back office while keeping a reliable purchase flow. (Belvedere is a Vancouver client — the example illustrates technical depth, not a local presence.)

Premium performance and experience

Decoupling the storefront from Shopify opens the door to a far faster site that's true to your brand. Built with Next.js, React and TypeScript, your transactional site renders pages server-side, optimizes images and ships only the code that's needed — instead of carrying the scripts and weight of a generic theme.

The visual identity is no longer bound by a template: for Belvedere, the minimal art direction was implemented pixel-perfect, independently of Shopify. You get an online store that behaves like a modern application, polished on mobile and desktop, and built for search (sitemap, structured data, Open Graph images).

The code is also clean on the privacy front: consent-gated analytics, no tracking scripts before opt-in. The compliance argument (in the spirit of Quebec's Law 25) rests on these development practices, not on server location.

Integrations: payment, booking and more

A headless store is only valuable if it integrates cleanly with your other tools. Payment stays handled by Shopify Checkout — proven and secure — while the rest of the experience remains entirely under your control.

On Belvedere's site, the Shopify store sits alongside appointment booking (Squire widget) and a form wired to Resend, all in a single branded experience. This ability to make several services work together — commerce, booking, transactional emails — within one coherent application is central to my work. Beyond Shopify, I also build custom platforms with Supabase, PostgreSQL or internal APIs when the project calls for it.

Behind every project is an engineer who is a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, with 15 years of experience and dual training in graphic design and software engineering — not an agency that subcontracts.

Frequently asked questions.

What is a headless (decoupled) Shopify store?

It's a store where Shopify handles the catalog, inventory, orders and checkout, while the site itself is an independent web application that talks to Shopify through the Storefront API. You keep the reliability of Shopify commerce while gaining full control over design and performance, without a theme's limits.

Why choose headless over a standard Shopify theme?

A theme is still the right call for many projects. Headless becomes relevant when you need a highly polished brand experience, superior performance, or to integrate commerce with other systems (booking, content, internal APIs) within a single application. I steer you toward the approach that genuinely fits your needs, without over-engineering.

Is checkout still secure in headless mode?

Yes. Payment stays handled by Shopify Checkout, which is PCI-compliant, while the storefront and cart are custom-built through the Storefront API and Cart API. You get the best of both worlds: a proven purchase flow and a fully customized experience.

Do you work with clients across Quebec?

Yes. Based in Montreal, I work remotely with businesses, nonprofits and institutions across Quebec, in both French and English. Projects run collaboratively and iteratively, regardless of your location.
